Zafra
Lounging Around the Palace

We were lucky we did our exploring of Zafra the day we arrived, because as forecasted, the next day was nasty - very windy and rainy. No problem - we were quite cosy in our palace/castle. Here are a few photos of interesting buildings, streets and squares in Zafra. And yes, it was that quiet and free of people!

We walked to the outskirts of the town for a better look at an “arete” we had seen riding in. It’s a word borrowed from the French meaning “fishbone” and refers to sharp-crested ridge. It looked like a long row of granite teeth.

And we had a visit with this very sociable donkey who was also enjoying the view.

On our second day in Zafra, as it was raining, we treated ourselves to a nice late lunch in a elegant little restaurant as we had really just had a budget meal in our hotel room the night before - cheese, crackers and fruit. We shared a caramalized pear salad and Jim had cod in a green aioli sauce and I had a mushroom veg ravioli. Zafra was very tourist-free the days that we were there and we were the only guests in the restaurant.
Our lunch was delicious with very good service!

We had a long 62 km ride ahead of us to Merida the next day - a push but our reward was going to be 5 nights in a nice apartamento with a washing machine! The day dawned clear and sunny and after carbo-loading at the palace buffet breakfast, we bade a fond farewell to the Zafra Parador and hello to our friend, the N630.
